Friday 22nd August

bluefin tuna leaping

We had a couple of awesome trips today in warm, calm conditions. This morning we quickly found a grey seal fishing in the middle of the bay who looked at us in an unhurried way for a while before diving down again to continue. A bit further on we found a pod of common dolphins  who were very uninterested in us so we left them alone and continued to the island where we saw a young grey seal perched high up on the rocks. More common dolphins kept us closer inshore, then very close to the coast we had a spectacular, close up encounter with some bluefin tuna on the hunt. It looks from the photos as they they were hunting saury. There were even a few seals joining in the action and high up on the cliffs we could hear the mewing of peregrine falcons. During the afternoon, we were on repeat with tuna found offshore as well as inshore, feeding with gannets and kittiwakes. We had the sad sight of a juvenile gannet entangled in trawl net which will kill it soon. We also saw common dolphins and porpoises, and more seals hunting with the inshore tuna. We also saw an ocean sunfish.
