Friday 21st August

Two dolphins swimming in the ocean with visible waves.

What a long day! Definitely a case of make hay while the sun shines, as conditions next week are currently looking dire!

This morning we had a three hour trip and headed down west to find the tuna. Sure enough they were there leaping away, though hard to get photos of. There were some seals with them as usual – I would be so intrigued to somehow see how the seals interact with the tuna. Do they hunt among them or do they hang around on the edges and wait for the tuna to do all the work for them? I have seen similar things at Land’s End in the winter. We also had great views of gannets and shearwaters and further east there appeared to be dolphins in the very far distance but unfortunately we had run out of time.

On the first Bay Discovery this afternoon we went far further than intended meaning we were very late back! The northerly wind had blown everything far out to sea but tantalisingly we could just the gannet activity on the horizon through the binoculars. The gannet diving was spectacular when we got there and there were stacks of common dolphins hunting underneath them – definitely worth the long bump back! On the last trip of the day, it had all moved just too far offshore to be reached in two hours. We  had a great sail on that strong wind, and lovely views of a seal hauled out on the rocks.
