Friday 12th September
This weather 😱! There was a bit of a window this morning so we headed out, undecided about whether it would be two or three hours. We sailed southwards into increasing swell, looking for fins among the waves and the birds. One lady saw a tuna breach, but the rest of us were all the looking in the other direction! A squall passed and so did a small fishing boat – we gave each other a rueful wave. We sailed back to the shelter of the coast where it was so much calmer and headed up almost to St Loy before hoisting the sails again and heading out to an area of bird feeding. There were some spectacular sights among the swells – three species of shearwater, gannets galore, a little storm petrel, a grey phalarope flitting around….and some common dolphins too! A couple swam with us for a little while. Heading back to the island, there were lots of seals sheltering in the lee of the coast, and a few swam over to give us a bit of a stare.
