Wednesday 25th June

common dolphin

We had a such a great day today. This morning after watching the seals on the island we spotted some intense gannet feeding a little further out, where there were large numbers of common dolphins with them. They were rushing round chasing fish as the gannets dived in from above and the shearaters flitted around at the surface. A few of them stayed with us as we slowly headed southwards, out to where we could see the Galeon Andalucia approaching! This (amazingly convincing) replica of a 17th century Spanish galleon was invited here as part of Penzance’s Golowan festivities and will be here in the wet dock for the next four days. They were by the Mount when we set off on the afternoon trip, waiting for the lock gates to open at high tide. Watching her come into port was a fine sight. Out at sea, there were more dolphins to see, and also a pod of about five porpoises which swam right past the boat.
