Tuesday 7th July

Ocean sunfish swimming underwater with a fin visible above the surface.

It was a lovely day today with warm sunshine and very little wind. It was one of those days when the wildlife is not obvious and you have to really search, however there were creatures to be found out there if you looked hard enough. On the morning three hour trip, it was all very quiet until we came to small pockets of birds feeding – Manx shearwaters, guillemots, razorbills and terns. There we saw an animal on its own which we assumed was a porpoise initially given its solitary state, but it turned out to be a single juvenile common dolphin. It being alone was a bit unusual and we also saw that it had the beak malformation that we occasionally see. I hope it will be ok. We also saw a grey seal snoozing in the water.

On the first afternoon trip, we tried a different route and were rewarded with some brilliant views of porpoises feeding with gannets, which we haven’t seen for a long time. A group of three of them circled the boat a few times, making their “pfff pfff” noise.

Finally we had the great pleasure of hosting Paul and his beautiful bride, who got married just this afternoon in Penzance! They and their family members came out on the boat to celebrate after the ceremony – fortunately the weather was idyllic and perfect for drinking champage and watching some more porpoises. Congratulations to them!
