Tuesday 20th August

ocean sunfish

It was very windy today, and three trips were hard hard work! However the sun was shining pretty much all day which was very welcome after the rain yesterday. Because of the strong northwesterly breeze and big swell, we motored up the coast before sailing back with it behind us. The waves made it harder to spot wildlife but we managed to find feeding bluefin tuna, an ocean sunfish and some grey seals on this morning’s Ocean Discovery trip. Among the Manx shearwaters there were some Cory’s and great shearwaters too. The first of the Bay Discovery trips this afternoon, we briefly headed down to one area where we frequently find cetaceans. While there were feeding gannets, the conditions made spotting fins difficult so we headed inshore into calmer waters. We saw six grey seals hauled out on the rocks. On the later Bay Discovery we saw big groups of porpoises, though again tricky to spot in the waves. They were there though! Everybody is going to sleep well tonight I think…
