Thursday 17th September

There was a fresh northwesterly wind today which made spotting conditions quite difficult even though there was stuff out there to see. On the morning Bay Discovery we sailed south – pretty quickly! – and found some circling and diving gannets near Lamorna, along with big tuna splashes. Common dolphins sporadically appeared and teased us, darting to and from the boat and then disappearing into the waves. Everyone got to see them before we headed back into the relative shelter of the coast. We then stopped at the island to look at the seals who were starting to haul out, including one male who was asleep right on the edge of a precipitous drop.

Even though it was windy, it was a northwesterly wind meaning we could do the four hour trip as planned this afternoon. There were lots more seals hauled out by this state of tide, including some very big males. The dolphin and tuna hunting near Lamorna was still active, though again they were tricky to spot in the waves. We then headed west before coming into the coast and seeing a few smaller tuna leaping under the cliffs.

After a windy spell, conditions are looking excellent from Sunday.
