Saturday 19th July

minke whale and coast

We just had a morning trip today because of the building southerly wind, which came up behind us as we sailed back to shore. It was a great Ocean Discovery trip. First we watched several seals snoozing in the water round the island. Heading south and seeing someĀ  gannets on the horizon we found them busily feeding with a pod of common dolphins. The gannets were particularly spectacular as they thumped repeatedly into the water. Duncan had the feeling there was something bigger around, and sure enough a minke whale was the spotted, and then a second one. Like yesterday they surfaced repeatedly round us – despite them not being the biggest whale out there (by any means!) it’s always a great thrill to spot a whale in Cornish waters. Further out we had some amazing views of dolphins including some leaping behaviour, before we sailed back to shore, just missing the rain.
