Saturday 16th May

Three seabirds with wings outstretched gliding over ocean waves.

We had a three hour Ocean Discovery this afternoon with a really fun bunch of women on board – Duncan was properly outnumbered! The rain that had been threatening held off for the first half of the trip, and we watched a few seals round the island before heading westwards along the coast into a strengthening westerly wind. It was the first lifeguarded day at Porthcurno but it was so cold there was hardly anyone around – luckily next week looks as though it will warm up. Sailing offshore we passed streams and streams of shearwaters soaring past us, several groups of mixed auks, kittiwakes and a few gannets. We saw our first sooty shearwater of the season, flying very close in along the coast. We then had an absolutely blistering sail up into the bay as a rain squall came through, getting nearly 13 knots! Thanks for joining us this afternoon, ladies.
