Saturday 11th October

Shark breaching water surface, splashing in the ocean.

It was a very tuna-jumping type of day today! We started with an Ocean Discovery tour, heading south and quickly finding tuna feeding beneath gannets. As we continued offshore, more tuna breaches appeared—some very close to the boat—followed by a decent-sized group of porpoises also foraging. On both trips, the seals were moaning and groaning at each other. Today also included the autumn seal census, and we recorded seven seals hauled out around the island.
This afternoon’s Bay Discovery trip was similar to the morning experience. A mum-and-calf porpoise pair made a very close appearance, giving our guests fantastic views just as the sun began to come out. On the way back in, a flock of guillemots was seen flying past. Other seabirds spotted today included kittiwakes, Mediterranean gulls, gannets, and a great skua.
