Friday 30th August

leaping common dolphins

Another long busy day today, but August is nearly over so make hay! This morning’s four hour trip set off in the calmest conditions imaginable – no wind at all, but a long lazy swell kept the sea moving a little. After watching a few seals round the island, things were quiet in the bay, so we headed south to what is becoming Shearwater City, and sure enough found them. Thousands of different species of shearwaters feeding, along with countless pockets of common dolphins almost wherever we looked. The fish that both are feeding on might be too small for the gannets to be interested in. We also saw bluefin tuna and had some really lovely views of harbour porpoises. On the first of the Bay Discovery trips this afternoon the dolphin and porpoise theme continued – the porpoises are being ever so inquisitive at times. Cloud cover and the breeze built for the evening trip, which made the sea quite choppy to finish the day. We saw some grey seals and more porpoises, though they were trickier to spot in the chop.

Tomorrow we have just the one trip as we are exhausted! One space remains on the Ocean Discovery trip at 1pm, and a few more on Sunday (9am and 1pm trips).
