Friday 20th September

watching common dolphins
We had two Ocean Discovery trips today and they were both crackers. It was still a little choppy and splashy but the easterly wind dropped down through the day and there was some warm hazy sunshine. We found some big groups of common dolphins this morning, some of whom were eager to bowride with us. There were large feeding aggregations of gannets visible from a long way off, and a few shearwaters left including a sooty shearwater. There were eight seals at the island. During the afternoon the wind rose a little and some brave souls at the front got rather wet, but it soon dropped off again. Diving gannets in the distance looked promising, and sure enough there were loads of harbour porpoises there who gave us some really great views. We turned back eastwards and in the bay there were lots of more groups of diving gannets, who soon showed us where there were more common dolphins! Three of them in particular were very interested in bowriding us on the boat. The fantastic September trips continue…
