Friday 15th August

A whale's back and dorsal fin visible above calm ocean water.

We had a long day today with an Ocean Discovery trip followed by two Bay Discovery trips. This morning we had fantastic views (and smells!) of a minke whale as it surfaced repeatedly close to the boat, sharing with us all its unforgettable perfume of dead fish and rotting cabbage. They were the best views we’ve had of a whale for some time. We also saw harbourĀ  porpoises and lots of common dolphins, including one dead one sadly. The first trip of the afternoon found lots more dolphins, and we had a great sail in the building easterly breeze. Hauled out on the rocks we saw a small juvenile seal with a satellite tag on its back – I would love to know the story of this little one in case anyone can shed any light! S/he was snuggled in next to a massive adult male seal. The final trip of the afternoon found yet more dolphins and the seals were still there.

Unfortunately the weekend is looking really windy so trips are cancelled.
