Thursday 17th October

Cory's shearwater

It was bright and mild today but breezy with a bit of a swell. On our Ocean Discovery trip this morning we saw two groups of grey seals hauled out on the island as the tide got lower – as it was a really big spring tide it got very low indeed. These were a mixture of adult males, female and juveniles. The swell and tide made itself evident as we headed out of the bay so it was tough for spotting fins, but the seabird sightings were again awesome. All these Cory’s shearwaters inshore – what are they doing here? What is driving them in, and what is lacking offshore (and why?) meaning they are here? Always questions. There were also a few great shearwaters – the shearwaters and the gulls showed us again where there were bluefin tuna feeding.

Next spaces are on Saturday morning a 10am (3 hour trip).
