At least 17 of the inshore pod of bottlenose dolphins hung around Penzance all day today. They displayed many behaviors from feeding to socialising to resting, which were interesting to watch.

We have been keeping photo identification records of the South Wests inshore bottlenose dolphins since 2007 and now have nearly 40 recognised individuals in our catalogue – the 2013 version is here . As well as the photos we collect numerous other information during an encounter. This helps us to understand how they are using the area as well as where they travel to when they are not off Penzance. Through working with Cornwall Wildlife Trust, Marine Life, Devon and Dorset Wildlife Trusts we are starting to build a picture of their range. It is important to keep good records as these can be used to help inform decisions about where we might set up protected areas and how we might manage them.
