Monday April 7th
Despite the sunny spring weather, it’s been a really windy week, which has kept is port bound since last Monday. While it was still quite choppy, we were able to run a three hour trip this afternoon. We chose our easterly route which uses the shelter of the Lizard and Cudden point and allows us to explore the gentle beauty of the east side of the bay. We saw some sandwich terns on a buoy on leaving the harbour – they’re like cats, as they love to sit on things! Under St Michael’s Mount we watched a seal catch a large fish, and then have to protect it from some marauding gulls. At Cudden is was unusually busy on the inaccessible beach, but the seals who were in the water over there seemed to find the activity quite fascinating. There were six of them in total. We then headed offshore forĀ a gorgeous sail – it was pretty quiet for seabirds as often happens in a spring easterly, but we did pick up several gannets and small flocks of Manx shearwater, as well as the odd guillemot. At the end of the trip saw a seal dozing in the water by the island.
