Monday 29th September
After a busy week that has felt like a second summer, we had one Ocean Discovery this morning.
We started by visiting the seals, who were bobbing around the island. Wanting to make the most of the flat calm seas, we headed south. Before long, we were picking up porpoises spread out around us. After watching them feed for a while, we left them to it. We spotted some birds diving in the distance and could see dolphins feeding beneath them. On the way out we witnessed one poor kittiwake was being harassed by two great skuas and one Arctic skua.
Multiple groups of common dolphins were the cause of the feeding, with lots of smaller calves present in most of the groups we encountered throughout the trip. As the feeding faded, a few decided to bow-ride with us. The calm water allowed us to see deep down and observe some interesting social behaviours, including mating and sideways swimming.
Before we knew it, we had to start heading back to Penzance, spotting more porpoises and resting common dolphin groups along the way.
The weather seems to be turning sour with a vengeance towards the end of the week, but conditions look good over the next two days. If you were thinking of having an autumnal adventure, now would be the time to book one of the few remaining spaces.
