A day of exploration and discovery in the fascinating world of marine science
Quick Details
-
What to expect: Throughout the day, you will learn how to identify and record different marine mammals for scientific research, use maps and electronics to understand the marine geography around you, and gain practical experience in preparing our sailing catamaran, Shearwater II, for a trip out to sea. Additionally, you will be taught essential skills to ensure the safety and well-being of yourself and others while at sea. What to Expect: Session 1: Onshore Preparation • Introduction to the marine geography of Mount’s Bay • Overview of local wildlife, including identification techniques and seasonality • Understanding the data collection process using Shearwater II as a “platform of opportunity” • Preparing for a trip to sea, including safety briefings and equipment checks Session 2: At Sea (3–4 Hours Aboard Shearwater II) • Instruction on basic sailing, navigation, survey techniques, guiding skills, and data collection • Practice in searching for and identifying seabirds, marine mammals, and fish • Hands-on experience, including an opportunity to take the helm and practise sailing skills Session 3: Reflection and Future Preparation • Discussion of key learnings from the day • Preparation for your future trip and understanding your role as a crew member and guide Kit List • Dress warmly for the day • We can provide a waterproof jacket and overtrousers, but you are welcome to bring your own • Trainers, wellies, or waterproof footwear are all appropriate • Binoculars (if you have them, they will be useful!) • Packed lunch and a drink • Pen and notepad (or another means to take notes) This day is suitable for all levels of experience, whether you are a budding marine biologist or simply curious about the ocean. Our expert team will be on hand to guide and support you throughout the experience. We encourage you to bring a sense of curiosity, a willingness to engage, and a passion for discovery. Together, we will explore the incredible marine world and gain a deeper appreciation for the science that helps us understand and protect it. We look forward to an exciting and inspiring day with you. As with all trips, the schedule will be weather-dependent. If you are travelling from a distance, it’s a good idea to have alternative plans in place, as we wouldn’t want to run the day in conditions that turn it into an endurance test!
